About Us

Our Brand and Legacy

Dr. Jose G. Tamayo and Dr. Josefina Laperal Tamayo, both doctors and visionary leaders, had long been involved in improving the quality of life in the Philippines through healthcare and education. Recognizing the vital role that financial empowerment plays in uplifting lives, they saw that in addition to healthcare and education, there was also a pressing need for accessible financial services to empower Filipinos in their daily lives. This vision led to the creation of USBI as a savings and loan institution, initially focusing on the financial needs of individuals and families, and later expanding to include MSMEs.

USBI was founded on June 8, 1977, by Dr. Jose G. Tamayo and Dr. Josefina Laperal Tamayo. The bank was initially established as University Savings and Loan Association (USALA), later evolving into University Savings Bank, Inc. (USBI). The founders’ names, when combined, formed the acronym JONELTA—a brand which became synonymous with nation-building and social progress.

In 1998, the bank transitioned into a thrift bank under the name University Savings and Loan Bank (USLB), which later became University Savings Bank, Inc. (USBI) in 2006. This evolution marked the bank’s growing capabilities in providing a diverse array of financial services, including savings accounts, time deposits, and loans for individuals, businesses, and communities.

Leadership: Legacy and Continuity

The legacy of Dr. Jose G. Tamayo and Dr. Josefina Laperal Tamayo continued through their eldest son, Antonio L. Tamayo. Antonio, alongside his wife Daisy Moran Tamayo, co- founded the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD), a prestigious educational institution that carries the DALTA name, an acronym for Daisy, Antonio, Laperal, and Tamayo. Under Antonio’s leadership, the DALTA Group expanded far beyond education, creating a strong presence in healthcare, private and corporate health insurance, real estate, infrastructure, agriculture, and maintenance services.

Strategic Presence and Expansion

USBI currently operates five (5) branches strategically located in key areas: Manila; Biñan City, Laguna; Las Piñas City; Gen. Mariano Alvarez (GMA) Cavite; and Molino, Cavite. In 2018, the Corporate Office was relocated to Biñan City, enhancing USBI’s ability to strengthen its operations and streamline decision-making processes.

The bank’s expansion plans include the planned expansion of its branch network through organic growth or strategic acquisitions and by expanding depositors’ touchpoints such as online, ATM and mobile banking. These initiatives are designed to meet the growing demands of USBI’s customer base while further enhancing its service offerings.

A Proud Member of the Community

Beyond financial services, USBI is an integral part of the Perpetual Help Group of Companies, which includes nine universities, two hospitals, and various other enterprises. The group is committed to nation-building through its diverse portfolio, which spans education, healthcare, real estate, agriculture, and other essential sectors.

USBI is also a member of the Chamber of Thrift Banks (CTB) and the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIC), adhering to the highest standards of governance and financial responsibility.

Empowering the future:
USBI's commitment to growth and innovation

With a rich history rooted in nation-building and a strong commitment to providing accessible financial services, University Savings Bank, Inc. continues to grow and evolve under the stewardship of the Tamayo family.
